The Pittsburgh Penguins' commitment to a rebuild became even clearer today as they traded Michael Bunting to the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Luke Schenn and forward Tommy Novak. This move comes shortly after acquiring Bunting as part of the Jake Guentzel trade, signaling Pittsburgh's intent to retool for the future while adding experienced pieces to their roster.
Breaking Down the Return
Luke Schenn, a 35-year-old veteran defenseman, brings physicality and leadership to the Penguins' blue line. A two-time Stanley Cup champion, Schenn has long been known for his defensive reliability and toughness. While he may not be part of Pittsburgh’s long-term plans, his presence could provide stability for a younger defensive group or even serve as another trade asset closer to the deadline.
Tommy Novak, a 26-year-old forward, is a more intriguing piece of the deal. Coming off a breakout 2022-23 season where he recorded 43 points (17 goals, 26 assists) in 51 games, Novak has shown offensive upside. His ability to play center or wing gives Pittsburgh some much-needed flexibility in their forward group. If given an expanded role, he could emerge as a valuable contributor during the team's transition phase.
With Bunting now gone and Vincent Desharnais also traded, Pittsburgh continues to reshape its roster in real time. While veterans like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang remain, the team’s latest moves indicate a clear focus on the future rather than a last-ditch playoff push. As the trade deadline approaches, it remains to be seen whether the Penguins will make further moves to stockpile assets or if this marks the extent of their retooling efforts for now. With the season now nearing the end, the Penguins should direct all their focus to the Draft and the upcoming lottery as they hope to land Michael "The Future" Misa.
